Psycho-Educational Assessments

What is a Psycho-educational Assessment?

A psycho-educational assessment is a comprehensive look at you or your child’s intellectual functioning, academic learning, graphomotor skills, and social, emotional, and/or behavioural concerns. We compare scores against other same-aged peers to understand their personal strengths and areas of need, and how this impacts their school success or day-to-day functioning.

The following steps are completed:

  • Gather information about the referral concerns, development, medical & learning history (Choose an intake meeting in-person OR online)

  • Review of report cards, relevant school work, and any previous assessments from other professionals

  • 1:1 testing using standardized measures, completed over 2-4 testing sessions

  • Send out rating scales to home & school; a teacher interview may also be completed

  • Write a comprehensive report providing tailored strategies of support

  • Complete a feedback meeting to discuss the results; children do not need to attend this meeting (Choose a feedback meeting in-person OR online)

At the end of the assessment, you will leave with a detailed understanding of your child’s/ your own learning and a step by step guide of recommendations, given in order of priority to implement.

When is a Psycho-educational Assessment needed?

Do you or your child struggle with reading, writing or math? Are you concerned about poor memory or slow processing speed? Have you noticed anxious behaviour or low mood? Have teachers brought up concerns?

If so, a psycho-educational assessment may be recommended to get a greater understanding of the learning profile and day-to-day functioning. This is especially beneficial if there are multiple areas of concern. Families frequently choose a full psycho-educational assessment when they want to look into Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disability, Anxiety or Mood Disorders, and/or ADHD. Knowing their profile provides strategies to support success across school, home, and in their community.
